HC Deb 01 March 1988 vol 128 cc520-2W
Mr. McGrady

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the waiting time for tonsillectomy operations in each of the four health board areas in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Needham

It is not possible to identify tonsillectomy as a separate treatment within waiting list information. Patients waiting for this operation are included in ENT waiting lists.

The table shows, for each health and social services board, the numbers of in-patients on ENT waiting lists by time spent on lists, at 30 September 1987. These figures are provisional.

leakage from council dumps in Northern Ireland polluting salmonid waters in Northern Ireland in the last five years; and if he will give details of any such incidents.

Mr. Needham

[holding answer 26 February 1988]: The information requested is not collected centrally and could only be assembled at disproportionate cost. Information on the main polluting discharges is however being compiled and I will write to the hon. Gentleman as soon as possible.

Mr. William Ross

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he knows of any reason why the Ardilea river, County Down, should not be designated a salmonoid water under European Community directive 78/659/EEC.

Mr. Needham

[holding answer 26 February 1988]: I am not aware of any reason why the Ardilea river should not be designated as a salmonoid water under European Community directive 78/659/EEC.

Mr. William Ross

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he has any proposal to designate the Ardilea river, County Down, as salmonid water under European Economic Community directive 78/759/EEC.

Mr. Needham

[holding answer 26 February 1988]: There are no proposals at present to designate the Ardilea river as a salmonid water under European Economic Community directive 78/659/EEC.

Mr. William Ross

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland when he expects to complete the process of monitoring rivers and streams in Northern Ireland to decide whether they reach the standards set down for salmonid waters in European Community directive 78/659/EEC.

Mr. Needham

[holding answer 26 February 1988]: A total of 1,062 km of the main salmonid waters have already been designated and are monitored to ensure that the requirements of European Community directive 78/659/EEC are met. It is the Department's intention to extend designations as resources permit, but, with other priorities, I am unable to give firm dates for completion.
