To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, further to his answer to the hon. Member for Rugby and Kenilworth,Official Report, 23 February, columns 150–52, what were the principal reasons for the accidents involving cars on the stretch of the M1 referred to.

The principal reasons appear to have been (i) excessive speed, (ii) vehicles travelling too close to each other, (iii) driver fatigue and (iv) bad driving in poor weather conditions such as fog, ice or snow.
