The Department has four deputy secretaries. Their main responsibilities and numbers of staff will be as follows from 14 March, after a reorganisation:

  1. i. Road Safety and Licensing and Principal Finance Officer. 10,267 staff: including four grade 3s, one grade 4 and 14 grade 5s.
  2. ii. Highways and Traffic. 1,770 staff: including four grade 3s, seven grade 4s and 28 grade 5s.
  3. 561
  4. iii. Aviation, Shipping and International Transport. 1,256 staff: including five grade 3s, four grade 4s and 19 grade 5s.
  5. iv. Public Transport and Research. 747 staff: including three grade 3s, two grade 4s and 13 grade 5s.

The numbers of staff shown are based on staff in post at 1 February 1988. Other grades of staff would not normally report direct to a deputy secretary.
