§ Mr. NewtonThe Project 2000 proposals do not envisage the wholesale transfer of student nurses into higher education. We have, however, accepted that there should be closer links with higher education and some expansion in the degree opportunities for nurses. The level of bursaries for student nurses, including those in higher education, is under consideration. We will not he in a position to make final decisions on the level of non-means-tested bursaries until the statutory nursing bodies come forward with firm proposals on the precise pattern of nurse education.
