HL Deb 30 June 1988 vol 498 c1817WA
Baroness Fisher of Rednal

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether after 1992 they expect the Single European Market to affect the consumer protection afforded by the legislation relating to hallmarking of precious metals.

The Secretary of State for Trade and Industry (Lord Young of Graffham)

Achievement of the 1992 target for completion of a single market within the European Community will depend on agreement in the Council of Ministers on a very large number of detailed measures. The Commission has not yet brought forward any proposals on the subject of hallmarking. Should any proposals be brought forward which would affect UK hallmarking law we will ensure that there will be appropriate consultation with those affected.
