HC Deb 27 June 1988 vol 136 cc113-4W
Mr. Dickens

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will launch a national campaign to encourage women motorists and passengers to render assistance to stranded women motorists.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Our advice isBefore going on any long journey make sure your vehicle is in good condition and has enough fuel. If you break down on the motorway, get your car as near to an emergency phone as possible. If you cannot see a phone look for the marker arrows and follow them—they show the direction of the nearest phone. While on the hard shoulder, or telephoning, keep a sharp look out, and do not accept lifts from strangers; wait for the police or breakdown service.

We encourage drivers to be courteous and helpful to others, both while on the road, and in the event of accidents or breakdowns.
