To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the limit on the number of personal car imports imposed on an individual per year.

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many(a) motorcars, (b) vans, and (c) other motor vehicles, imported as new vehicles from the Irish Republic, have been processed through the Vehicle Inspection Branch, Balmoral road, Belfast, in each of the last 12 months for which figures are available.

[holding answer 21 June 1988]: Vehicle inspection branch processes only those cases of imported private cars where there is doubt about their compliance with type approval requirements. Type approval does not apply to vans and other motor vehicles. The number of private cars referred to vehicle inspection branch is set out in the following table.
