HC Deb 23 June 1988 vol 135 c676W
52. Mr. Amess

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what representations he has received seeking an increase in the penalties available to the courts for offences relating to(a) litter, (b) graffiti and (c) vandalism; and what response he has made.

Mr. John Patten

We have received representations from some hon. Members and members of the public. However, we believe the existing maximum penalties to be adequate. These are 10 years' imprisonment or an unlimited fine, or both, for offences of criminal damage, which include graffiti writing and vandalism, and a fine of £400 for dropping litter.
