HC Deb 23 June 1988 vol 135 cc687-8W
14. Mr. Cryer

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the total estimated cost of policing traffic for 1988–89.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

I regret that it is not possible to provide an accurate estimate of the total cost of policing traffic. However, it has been estimated that in 1985–86 the total costs for the 43 police forces in England and Wales of police officers employed in specialist traffic departments and of traffic wardens was of the order of £200 million. Traffic duties are also carried out by other uniformed officers but it is not possible to produce a separate estimate of the cost of such work.
