Mr. Hinchliffe

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) if he will detail the average number of beds in private residential homes for the elderly and handicapped for each year for which the figures are available since 1979;

(2) if he will detail the average number of beds in local authority residential homes for the elderly and handicapped for each year for which the figures are available since 1979;

(3) how many private residential homes registered under the Registered Homes Act have rooms containing three or more beds;

(4) what is the latest estimate for the numbers of elderly and handicapped persons living in private residential establishments with fewer than four beds.

Mrs. Currie

The average numbers of places, that is beds, per local authority and private residential care homes for elderly or handicapped people in England at 31 March in the years 1979 to 1986 are contained in the table. Information is not available centrally on residential establishments with fewer than four beds or on the numbers of beds in bedrooms within establishments.

Information on the average size of residential homes is not available centrally.

Details of the number of children and young persons in care accommodated in community homes are given in the table.

Information about the number of beds in individual rooms in nursing homes is not collected centrally.

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what representations he has received regarding his policy towards medical practitioners with pecuniary interests in particular private, residential or nursing homes treating residents or patients in those homes; and what response he made.
