HC Deb 23 June 1988 vol 135 cc702-3W
Mr. Salmond

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what investigations his Department has made of the legal aspects of constructing a nuclear waste disposal facility(a) under the sea bed, accessed from a coastal land base and (b) under the sea bed, accessed from an offshore structure; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Moynihan

Any proposal to develop a facility under the sea bed would be subject to a number of legal considerations. These will depend on the specific nature and location of the proposal.

Mr. Salmond

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what research by private companies his Department has wholly or partially financed regarding the disposal of nuclear waste(a) under land, accessed from a land base, (b) under the sea bed, accessed from a coastal land base, and (c) under the sea bed, accessed from an offshore structure; and if he will make a statement.

(2) what research his Department has undertaken regarding the disposal of nuclear waste (a) under land, accessed from a land base; (b) under the sea bed, accessed from a coastal land base, and (c) under the sea bed, accessed from an offshore structure; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Moynihan

The Department of the Environment has undertaken no research directly related to the disposal of nuclear waste since 1982 when Nirex was established. The company now has responsibility for such research. Work undertaken up to that time has been published and made available to Nirex.
