2. Mr. Wells

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what further measures his Department is taking to combat the abuse of drugs; and if he will make a statement.

67. Mr. Chapman

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what further measures his Department is taking to combat the sale of illegal drugs; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Hurd

Our effort against drug misuse must continue at full strength. The Government's strategy is set out in detail in "Tackling Drug Misuse", a new edition of which is being issued today. A copy has been sent to all right hon. and hon. Members. It recognises that there is no single answer to the problem, and that sustained action needs to be taken both to reduce the supply of, and demand for, drugs. The new powers, contained in the Drug Trafficking Offences Act 1986 for the police and courts to trace, freeze and confiscate the proceeds of drug trafficking have already proved their worth.
