HC Deb 22 June 1988 vol 135 cc567-8W
Ms. Short

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the prescribed period between YTS terminal date and eligibility to start a further education course of less than 21 hours per week for a claimant in receipt of income support or unemployment benefit; and if he has any plans to change this period.

Mr. Portillo

A person starting an education course of less than 21 hours a week could receive income support immediately if he or she had been: on a YTS course for the previous three months; or on a YTS course or receiving benefit for at least three months out of the last six months.

Otherwise, a person must receive unemployment benefit, sickness benefit, or income support, for three months before starting the course. There are no plans to change this period.
