Mr. Teddy Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the total number of persons employed in the European Economic Community Commission, the European Parliament, and other European Economic Community institutions, respectively; and what were the comparable totals in 1979.

Mrs. Chalker

The tables show the maximum authorised staff establishment for 1979 and 1988. The 1988 total represents a 37 per cent. increase over the 1979 figure. The Community grew from nine to 12 member states during the same period.
