HC Deb 21 June 1988 vol 135 c477W
Mr. Fallon

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how much is being spent by his Department on crime prevention measures in the current year; and what were the comparable figures for 1979–80.

Mr. John Patten

It is estimated that direct Home Office spending on crime prevention—on publicity, research, training, the safer cities programme and support for the new national organisation, Crime Concern—will total approximately £9 million in 1988–89. This compares with expenditure of some £350,000 in 1979–80, supporting publicity, training and research, a more than tenfold increase.
