HC Deb 21 June 1988 vol 135 c515W
64. Dr. Michael Clark

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what proportion of secondary schools have careers officers; and what guidelines his Department gives them on the performance of their duties.

Mr. Cope

On 1 October 1987 there were 3,740 posts for careers officers in local education authorities in England. Careers officers undertake a wide range of duties, including work in secondary schools. Local education authorities decide how careers officers are deployed to carry out their duties.

Local education authority careers officers perform their functions in accordance with statutory guidance issued by the Secretary of State, most recently in March 1988.
