49. Mr. Pike

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether the Government have any proposals to improve the staying-on rate at the age of 16 years; and if he will make a statement.

52. Mr. Illsley

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether the Government have any proposals to improve the staying-on rate at the age of 16 years; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Rumbold

The Government are committed to increasing the post-16 participation rate in education and training. The proposal in the Education Reform Bill will help to secure that by giving more young people the motivation and the qualifications they need to stay on after 16. The Government are also working to broaden the range of opportunities available to those who want to stay on; to ensure that young people know what their options are; to give greater coherence to the pattern of post-16 vocational qualifications; and to bring home to both young people and employers the vital importance of education and training.
