HC Deb 20 June 1988 vol 135 cc448-9W
Mr. William Powell

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what his Department does to assist wild animals in crossing busy roads and railways.

Mr. David Mitchell

On trunk roads the Department takes special measures to protect wildlife. Examples are deer runs to provide for safe crossing and special fencing and reflectors designed to frighten animals from straying on to roads. Special road signs advise motorists of 150 sites where migrating toads cross during the spawning season. British Rail takes similar measures where practicable, including provision of gaps in electric rails where there are known badger runs.
