Mr. Gordon Brown

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will give Government expenditure, excluding home student fee income, in total and per head of university population for each year since 1978–79 at constant prices, including planned expenditure per head for 1988–89 to 1990–91; and if he will give the number of new undergraduate entrants for 1978–79.

In the table, Government expenditure has been taken as the University Grants Committee recurrent grant to universities. Otherwise, the per capita figures are on the same basis as those contained in the reply I gave to the hon. Member on 13 June at columns 8–9. The full-time home undergraduate intake for the academic year for 1978–79 was 72,994.
