Mr. Wray

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what information he has on the comparative expenditure in medical and in scientific research for each year since 1974 in Belgium, France, Holland, Italy, Denmark and the Federal Republic of Germany in pounds sterling of 1988.

Mr. Jackson

Figures showing international comparisons of expenditure on research are published in the 1987 annual review of Government-funded R and D, which is in the Library. For 1985, the latest year for which figures are available, the details are as follows:

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is, for each year since 1974 and in 1988 moneys, the expenditure on medical or scientific research in (i) Scotland, (ii) Wales. (iii) Northern Ireland, (iv) England and (v) the whole of the United Kingdom.
