§ Mr. FlynnTo ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will publish estimates based on experience elsewhere of the changes in the numbers employed by local government in the areas covered by his valleys initiative following the implementation of the privatisation proposals in the Local Government Act 1988.
§ Mr. Peter WalkerPhased implementation of the competition provisions of the Local Government Act 1988 will not begin until 1 August 1989. Estimates of changes in the numbers employed by local government as a result of competition are not available. If local authorities are already competitive there would be no change. If they can improve their competitiveness it may make resources available for other activities.
