Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what is the percentage of unemployed who, having used the Government's sponsored job club scheme, have successfully gained a job during the last 12 months(a) nationally and (b) in the (i) Doncaster area and (ii) Mexborough area; and if he will make a statement on the general working of the scheme.

From April 1987 to March 1988 a total of 105,677 people passed through job clubs. Of these 57,080 (54 per cent.) went into jobs. During the same period, 680 people passed through job clubs in the Doncaster area of which 295 (43 per cent.) went into jobs. A total of 226 people passed through job clubs in the Mexborough area and, of these, 122 (54 per cent.) went into jobs.
