To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many people have been convicted in Scotland of homicide since the abolition of the death penalty for murder.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

From 1966 until 1987, a total of 749 people were convicted of murder. Comparable figures for culpable homicide are only available from 1969. From 1969 until 1987, a total of 647 people were convicted of culpable homicide.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many persons convicted of homicide in Scotland and released on licence or termination of sentence have been convicted of homicide again since the abolition of the death penalty.

Since 1965. three people released on licence from a previous murder conviction have been convicted of murder. Comparable information about homicides other than murder is not readily available and could not be obtained except at disproportionate cost.
