HC Deb 20 June 1988 vol 135 c446W
44. Mr. David Martin

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what progress is being made in his anti-drink and driving campaign.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The Secretary of State launched the latest phase of the Government's campaign against drinking and driving on 15 June. This continues the. "drinking and driving wrecks lives" theme from last year. We have now produced a new TV commercial to supplement the previous ones.

Our research shows that our campaigns are making an impact. There is evidence of a long-term reduction in the amount of drinking and driving.

We are greatly encouraged by the support of the private sector, and in particular the contribution of the brewing industry. New low and non-alcoholic beers have been introduced and sales are increasing rapidly.

We are determined to maintain the momentum of this campaign. Over 1,000 people each year are killed due to drinking and driving. It requires a major collective effort by all concerned to reduce this terrible toll.
