Customs and Excise Computers Project

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what proposals he has to privatise the Customs and Excise computers project.

Mr. Lilley

I assume that this question refers to the CHIEF project which is currently being negotiated between Customs and British Telecom. CHIEF will replace the current DEPS system which British Telecom already operate under contract with Customs. There is therefore no privatisation involved.
