HC Deb 20 June 1988 vol 135 c444W
32. Mr. French

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will introduce legislation to stipulate that the only types of telephone permitted to be used by the driver of a car whilst in motion are those equipped with voice-activated dialling.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Our advice is clear: anyone who can afford a car phone can afford a hands-free microphone.

Current legislation already places the responsibility on drivers to have proper control of their vehicles at all times. A driver who fails to do so as a result of distraction or lack of concentration is liable to prosecution.

There are no plans to introduce legislation to stipulate the type of car telephones permitted to be used.
