HC Deb 20 June 1988 vol 135 c410W
Mr. Ashley

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what National Health Service provision there is for specialised treatment for(a) serious brain injury and (b) serious amnesia; what plans he has to increase such provision; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Currie

The National Health Service offers a range of facilities for treatment of people with brain injury, including accident and emergency departments, neuro-surgery, and rehabilitation facilities. Treatment for amnesia sufferers is related to the medical condition with which the symptom is associated. It is for individual health authorities to determine the level of provision.

Mr. Ashley

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what estimates he has of the number of people suffering(a) serious brain injury and (b) serious amnesia; and how many new sufferers there are annually.

Mrs. Currie

I regret that this information is not available centrally. I am aware that the Medical Disability Society has recently published a report which contains estimates of the number of people suffering from brain injury.
