To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services how many persons aged 17 years and under were received into care by a local authority in England and Wales under section 7(7) of the Children and Young Persons Act 1969 in(a) 1985, (b) 1986 and (c) 1987; and how many in each year were from an ethnic minority background.

The number of young persons admitted to care by local authorities in England under section 7(7) of the Children and Young Persons Act 1969 for the most recent three years for which information is currently available is given in the table. Information for 1987 is not yet available.

Information about the ethnic origin of children and young people in care is not collected centrally.

Information for Wales is a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.
