Ms. Mowlam

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will provide figures for the last five years for the amount spent by his Department on sport; and if he will give a breakdown of such figures into convenient categories.

Dr. Mawhinney

[holding reply 14 June 1988]: The information requested is as follows:

6.2 million people had registered out of a total electorate of about 8 million. Registration is continuing at about 400,000 per month. Voters require identity cards to enable them to register. At the end of May, just over 7.5 million new identity cards had been issued.
