To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what is(a) the national average wage, and (b)that paid in local authority sheltered workshops.

Mr. Lee

The average gross weekly earnings (excluding bonuses, overtime and shift premiums) taken from the new earnings survey April 1987 for full-time adult employees whose pay was not affected by absences was £170.70. In April 1987 the average weekly rate of pay in most local authority sheltered workshops was estimated to be £95.10; the current average weekly rate of pay in these workshops is estimated to be £102.28.
