HC Deb 16 June 1988 vol 135 cc246-7W
Mr. Battle

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment whether, following the laying before Parliament of the order to establish the Leeds urban development corporation in May, a detailed map of the site can now be published.

Mr. Trippier

Copies of the 1:10,000 map referred to in the order are available for inspection in the Library and at the offices of my Department and of Leeds city council.

Mr. Battle

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what consultations have taken place, following the laying before Parliament of the order to establish the Leeds urban development corporation in May, with Leeds city council; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Trippier

Prior to the order being laid I kept both the City council and local Members of Parliament informed at each stage of the process; and I invited the city council to comment on the proposed boundaries. The next step is for Parliament to debate the order.

Mr. Battle

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) following the laying before Parliament of the order to establish the Leeds urban development corporation in May, whether the board will include representatives from groups and bodies within the local community in whose area the urban development corporation lies;

(2) whether the board of the Leeds urban development corporation has now been appointed; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Trippier

The board cannot be appointed until Parliament has approved the order and the corporation has been established. My right hon. Friend has announced Mr. Peter Hartley as chairman-designate; other members will include people with special knowledge of the locality and people with appropriate business or professional experience. He is currently consulting Leeds city council about his intention to appoint local authority members to the board.

Mr. Battle

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment whether, following the laying before Parliament of the order to establish the Leeds urban development corporation in May, the commissioned consultative report on the urban development corporation potential can now be published.

Mr. Trippier

The report has now been published. I have placed copies in the Library and sent copies to Members with constituencies in the area.

Mr. Battle

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what progress has been made to date with establishing the Leeds urban development corporation; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Trippier

Excellent progress has been made. I hope Parliament will approve the orders and the corporation will be established in the next few weeks.
