To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a further statement on progress within the European Community with regard to the harmonisation of value added tax and excise duties.

75. Mr. Morley

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a further statement on progress within the European Community with regard to the harmonisation of value added tax and excise duties.

Mr. Lilley

The Economic and Finance Council discussed the Commission's proposals at its informal meeting in May. My right hon. Friend reiterated the United Kingdom's view that tax approximation is unnecessary for the completion of the single market. Most other member states also expressed reservations.

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer when he next expects the harmonisation of value added tax and excise duties to be discussed at the Council of Ministers.

Mr. Lilley

The Council of Ministers meets from time to time to discuss a variety of matters.
