To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what proposals are being made to the European Commission on taxation on tourists, in the light of the introduction of the European single market; and what representations he has received seeking a tourism or landing tax in the United Kingdom.

The Government have made no proposals to the European Commission on taxation of tourists. My right hon. Friend has received a small number of representations about imposing a tax on arrivals in or departures from the United Kingdom.
