HC Deb 10 June 1988 vol 134 cc697-8W
Mr. Frank Field

To ask the Attorney-General what were the reasons for his intervention with regard to the Joseph Rowntree charitable trust and the Joseph Rowntree memorial trust following the trusts' public stance on the takeover bids for Rowntree plc by Nestle and Suchard.

The Attorney-General

A request for information was made on my behalf to the trustees of the Joseph Rowntree charitable trust and the Joseph Rowntree memorial trust in exercise of my responsibilities as protector of charity under the Crown, in the light of a report inThe Daily Telegraph on 2 June.

Mr. Frank Field

To ask the Attorney-General whether he consulted the charity commissioners or any other body before making representations to the trustees of the Joseph Rowntree memorial and charitable trusts regarding their charitable responsibilities to their beneficiaries in the context of the proposed takeover of Rowntree plc.

The Attorney-General

The Treasury Solicitor sought information from officials of the Charity Commission as to the likely identities of the charitable trusts referred to inThe Daily Telegraph's report of 2 June and requested copies of the relevant trust documents. No other body was consulted before these inquiries were made on my behalf.
