Mr. Soley

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the total cost of identifiable public expenditure; according to the main functions for housing in the years 1980–81 to 1987–88; and what was the expenditure per head of population for each of those years.

The table shows, in £ million and £ per head of the population, public expenditure on the housing function which can be identified as having been incurred in one of the four countries of the United Kingdom.

Figures prior to 1982–83 are not available on a consistent basis because of changes in definition that have taken place between different public expenditure White Papers. Figures for 1987–88 are not yet available. The figures given above cannot be further disaggregated but a more detailed functional analysis of United Kingdom public expenditure can be found in table 2.7 of "The Government's Expenditure Plans 1988–89 to 1990–91" (Cmnd. 288-I).
