HC Deb 09 June 1988 vol 134 c684W
74. Mr. Gill

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food by what number he estimates the United Kingdom pig population would need to be increased so as to achieve national self-sufficiency in pigmeat; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Donald Thompson

Latest estimates indicate that the United Kingdom is currently more than self-sufficient in pork but only 40 per cent. self-sufficient in bacon and ham. An increase in the pig population approaching 30 per cent. would be needed to achieve national self-sufficiency in pigmeat, provided that this increase was wholly used for the production of bacon and ham.
