§ Mr. GummerMy Department will continue to keep in close touch with the agriculture, food and related industries on the progress of proposals in the single market programme, many of which continue the process of harmonising member states' laws to remove barriers to trade. Our objectives are to ensure that harmonisation takes place without discrimination and without imposing greater burdens than it removes; to protect our health status in the animal, plant and fish sectors; and to ensure that British companies have all the information they need with which to meet the challenge and take full advantage of the opportunities which harmonisation will bring.
