42. Dr. Michael Clark

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what measures he is taking to assist the food industry to adjust to the increased level of competition in the European single market.

49. Mr. Boswell

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what further action his Department proposes to take in preparation for the single European market in 1992.

Mr. Gummer

My Department will continue to keep in close touch with the agriculture, food and related industries on the progress of proposals in the single market programme, many of which continue the process of harmonising member states' laws to remove barriers to trade. Our objectives are to ensure that harmonisation takes place without discrimination and without imposing greater burdens than it removes; to protect our health status in the animal, plant and fish sectors; and to ensure that British companies have all the information they need with which to meet the challenge and take full advantage of the opportunities which harmonisation will bring.
