HC Deb 07 June 1988 vol 134 c574W
Mrs. Beckett

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what is his estimate of the number of tenants, by tenure, who would cease to qualify for a rent rebate allowance, and the savings in expenditure that would be made, if the rent taper were increased to 70 per cent.

Mr. Portillo

We estimate that if the rent taper were increased from 65 to 70 per cent. there would be a public expenditure saving of some £50 million; 90,000 local authority tenants would lose their rent rebates and 20,000 private tenants their rent allowances.
