HC Deb 07 June 1988 vol 134 c452W
Mr. Martlew

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what information he has as to the proportion of British Rail's passengers on(a) the provincial sector lines in central Wales, (b) the Fort William to Mallaig lines and (c) the Carlisle to Settle line who travel for leisure purposes.

Mr. David Mitchell

So far as(a) and (b) are concerned, no information, because these lines have not been proposed for closure. So far as the Settle-Carlisle line is concerned, a Cumbria county council survey showed that over 60 per cent. of passengers travelled simply for the pleasure of the line, and that 80 per cent. were travelling for leisure purposes generally.
