§ Mr. BerminghamTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, pursuant to his answer of 29 April,Official Report, column 286, regarding the definitions of prisons and prisoners in different Council of Europe countries, what information he has as to which institutions in Council of Europe countries are comparable to prisons run by the prison department in the United Kingdom but which are not classified as prisons in the Council of Europe's prison statistics.
§ Mr. Douglas HoggThe information available in the comparability of the statistics published by the Council of Europe was given in a recent article in the Home Office research bulletin, "International Comparisons of Prison Populations" by Patrick Collier and Roger Tarling, (issue number 23, 1987, pages 48–54).
