HC Deb 07 June 1988 vol 134 cc473-4W
Mr. Tom Clarke

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what aid the United Kingdom gave to Nicaragua in the latest year for which figures are available; and if he will publish a table showing how the aid was used in individual projects.

Mr. Chris Patten

The United Kingdom has given both bilateral and multilateral aid to Nicaragua. In 1986, bilateral aid was £86,000 of which £82,000 was for disaster relief and the remainder for technical co-operation. In 1987, bilateral aid was nil. The latest figures for multilateral aid to Nicaragua attributable to the United Kingdom are for 1985 when £2.9 million was contributed through all agencies of which £2.3 million was provided through the European Community. In that year, our bilateral aid was £116,000.

In addition to these amounts, we have co-financed with British voluntary agencies a number of small development projects in Nicaragua.
