To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the annual total of cases in which section 136 of the Mental Health Act was used for the last 10 years.

The figures in the table show the number of admissions to NHS mental illness and mental handicap hospitals and units in England under the provisions of section 136 of the Mental Health Act for each year since 1977.
