HC Deb 07 June 1988 vol 134 cc452-3W
Mr. Bermingham

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport when he expects(a) the M1 and (b) the M6 will be free from major road works; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Not soon.

This year's major maintenance work on the M I and M6 is due to be completed by the end of November. The volume of traffic on these motorways is high. A continuous programme of maintenance is necessary to keep the roads in good condition. Most major works take place between April and November. We plan and phase work to minimise disruption to road users.

It may be helpful to explain the arithmetic of motorway renewal. As on average 5 per cent. (about 20 route miles) of M1, M6 are renewed each year, the hon. Member may experience major road works for some time.
