To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what assessment he has made of the health risks associated with electromagnetic radiation in the context of very low frequency transmissions in the Rugby area; what is regarded as the minimum safe distance for persons living or working in the vicinity of such a transmitter; and if he will make a statement.

[holding answer 27 May 1988]: Such transmissions pose no health threat to people living and working in the area.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence (1) what is the role of the very low frequency communications facility at Rugby; whether it is subject to United Kingdom control; and if he will make a statement;

(2) how many United States personnel are based at the very low frequency communications facility at Rugby; what are their ranks; and what are their functions.

[holding answer 27 May 1988]: The facility, which is an unmanned site, provides a communications relay station for United States forces stationed in Europe.
