To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many working days were lost by strike action in January 1979 and January 1988; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lee

The number of working days lost through stoppages of work due to industrial disputes in January 1979 is 2,966,000. The comparable figure for January 1988 is provisionally estimated as 92,000 lost working days.
