HC Deb 07 June 1988 vol 134 cc425-6W
Mr. Beggs

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what measures currently exist to stimulate local manufacturing investment through the restraining of imports from Japan and Taiwan.

Mr. Alan Clark

There are no such restraint measures on imports from Japan or Taiwan, except for some quantitative restrictions on certain textile and clothing imports from Taiwan. These restrictions form part of the Community arrangements for textiles and clothing to allow European industry to adjust to new competition from low-cost suppliers. There are, however, some informal, inter-industry voluntary arrangements with Japanese producers, details of which were given in the written answer of 30 March, Official Report columns 478–79, to a question raised by my hon. Friend the Member for Darlington (Mr. Fallon).
