HC Deb 07 June 1988 vol 134 cc578-9W
Mr. Gordon Brown

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services how many families with children have incomes in excess of £30,000 in 1988–89.

Mr. Scott

The estimated number of families with children with gross incomes from all sources (including benefits) in excess of £30,000 per annum in 1988–89 is 370,000. This figure is based on projections from the 1985 family expenditure survey, supplemented by information from the survey of personal incomes.

Mr. Gordon Brown

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give for 1978–79 and 1988–89 the average income before and after tax of(a) families with children and (b) families and individuals without children.

Mr. Scott

Estimates for the financial year 1978–79 can be provided only at disproportionate cost. Only projections are available for 1988–89 which cannot be provided on a basis consistent with historic data. The latest year for which historic data are currently available is 1985; estimates for that year and the calendar year 1979 are as follows:

£ per week
Families with children Families and individuals without children
Income Before Tax
1979 (1979 prices) 123 75
1985 (1985 prices) 225 138
Income After Tax
1979 (1979 prices) 101 62
1985 (1985 prices) 180 112

Notes:

1. Income is the family's total income from all sources including benefits.

2. The figures used for tax include National Insurance Contributions.
