To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many new factory inspectors have been appointed in the latest period for which figures are available; and how many have left in the same period.

Between 1 May 1987 and 30 April 1988, a total of 20 factory inspectors joined the Health and Safety Executive and 44 left. Some 30 successful candidates from a recent recruitment exercise should be joining H SE shortly. A further recruitment programme for factory inspectors is under way.
