Whether they will make a statement about appointments to the new Broads Authority, and when the authority will be established.
The Minister of State, Department of the Environment (The Earl of Caithness)I am pleased to announce that the following have accepted the invitation of the Secretary of State for the Environment to be appointed members of the Authority; Mr. Stanley E. Alden, Mr. John A. Alston, Mr. Robin T. T. Bramley, Mr. Kenneth A. Buckley, Mr. Standley C. Bushell, Mr. David L. Court, Mr. J. Michael Evans, Mr. Bryan C. Read, Mr. Nigel I. Wright.
Under the provisions of the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads Act 1988 the Secretary of State is empowered to establish the authority as soon as he is satisfied that not less than 27 of the 33 members required to be appointed by the appointing authorities specified in the Act have been appointed.
The Secretary of State accordingly made an order on 26th May [SI 1988 No. 955 (C.28)] specifying today, 6th June 1988, as the date on which the authority will be deemed to be duly constituted. The order also specified 1st April 1989 as the "operative date" on which the authority will assume all its executive functions under the Act. In addition it brings into force a number of provisions of the Act between those dates, so as to give the authority such general powers as it will need to enable it to make all the necessary plans and preparations for the assumption of its executive functions.
