HC Deb 29 July 1988 vol 138 cc675-6W
Sir Eldon Griffiths

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will call for a report from the Chief Constable of the Royal Ulster Constabulary as to the cost to public funds of the security operation mounted by the Royal Ulster Constabulary in relation to the return of the bodies of Irish Republican Army terrorists killed in Gibraltar, including the cost required to guard their respective homes and to police the funerals.

Mr. Ian Stewart

I will write to my hon. Friend.

Sir Eldon Griffiths

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is his policy as to how the additional costs arising from the police operations in relation to the return of the Irish Republican Army members killed in Gibraltar shall be recouped.

Mr. Ian Stewart

The costs will be contained within existing provisions.

Sir Eldon Griffiths

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make available to the police authority and the Royal Ulster Constabulary extra funds to cover the additional costs of policing that arose in relation to the return to Northern Ireland of the three Irish Republican Army members killed in Gibraltar.

Mr. Ian Stewart

In any financial year there will be a number of known and unexpected events which will involve increased police activity. Such matters are taken into account during the preparation of the police authority's estimates.
